Texas Bird Photography Tours
Guided tours built around getting the shot, not just the tick
What it is: A guided birding tour designed for photographers — where the goal is a good image, not just a sighting. I’m a photographer myself, so we work for light, distance, and behavior, and I put you in position on birds that will actually hold for a frame. Based in Austin and the Hill Country and available across Texas, from the endemics and Painted Buntings of Central Texas to the rookeries of the coast and the tropical color of the Rio Grande Valley. All skill levels and any kit, from a superzoom to a big telephoto.
Small groups so everyone gets clean angles. Half-, three-quarter-, and full-day options, plus custom multi-day trips to the coast, the Valley, or West Texas.

How a photography tour is different
A birding tour is about finding and identifying birds; a photography tour is about working them. That changes how we run the day: we start early for the good light, approach slowly and read behavior to get close without flushing, and pick perches, backgrounds, and angles that make an image rather than just a record shot. I’ll help with field craft — where to stand for the light, how to anticipate a bird’s next move — while still getting you on the species you came for.
What we can target
The Hill Country endemics
Singing male Golden-cheeked Warblers and Black-capped Vireos on exposed spring perches — tough but rewarding subjects, best mid-March into May.
Color & song of Central Texas
Painted Buntings, Vermilion Flycatchers, hummingbirds, herons, and the resident cast around Austin — great for bright, clean images close to home.
Coastal rookeries & shorebirds
The upper coast for the High Island rookery’s nesting Roseate Spoonbills and egrets at eye level, plus close shorebirds at Bolivar Flats.
From the boat
Ask about boat-based sessions where you can shoot low and near the water for a completely different angle — images you can’t get from shore.
Gear & who it’s for
You don’t need pro gear — a telephoto or superzoom and a willingness to move slowly is enough, and I’ll tailor the pace to your setup. Beginners are welcome and will pick up plenty of field craft; experienced shooters can tell me their target list and we’ll go get it. A telephoto lens (anything from 300mm up) helps, and early mornings are best for both light and bird activity.
Your guide
I’m Bryan Cotter, an Austin-based professional birding guide and photographer. In 2025 I became the 10th person in history to record 500 bird species in Texas, and I hold the Travis County (Austin) Big Year record of 330 species. I’ve spent years learning where the birds are and how to get close for a shot — that’s exactly what a photography tour is built on. More about me →
Bird photography tour FAQ
Do you offer bird photography tours?
Yes — guided tours built specifically for photographers, where the goal is getting a good image. I’m a photographer myself and position you for light, distance, and behavior. Half-, three-quarter-, and full-day options around Austin, plus custom multi-day trips statewide.
What camera gear do I need?
A telephoto or superzoom lens (roughly 300mm or longer) is ideal, but you don’t need pro gear — bring what you have and I’ll tailor the approach. Beginners are welcome; experienced shooters can hand me a target list.
When is the best light and time for bird photography?
Early morning, generally — the light is soft and warm and birds are most active. Spring adds singing males on exposed perches and breeding color; the coastal rookeries peak in spring as well.
Can we photograph the Hill Country endemics?
Yes, in season (mid-March into May). Singing male Golden-cheeked Warblers and Black-capped Vireos use exposed perches in spring, which is your best chance at a frame — see the Hill Country endemics tour for more.
Do you offer photography from the boat?
Yes — ask about boat-based sessions. Shooting low and close to the water gives a striking angle on waterbirds that you can’t get from shore.
