Rio Grande Valley Birding - Destinations
Mission Area - Hidalgo County
Bentsen Rio-Grande Valley State Park
One of my favorite places in the valley because I believe it has the most variety of birds and probably the best chance at the rarest of birds.
National Butterfly Center
This park offers beautiful birds, butterflies, and other wildlife and is a relaxing place to enjoy nature. It's the top place for everything butterfly and is also a great birding place with many species coming to it. They also feed the birds in the back and it's a wonderful experience that just can't be missed.
Anzalduas Park
This is a nice park that can have some good birds. Black-Throated Gray Warblers can be found here along with plenty of other migrating warblers and other birds. It's along the Rio Grande River so lots of waterbirds can be seen like waterfowl, raptors, 3 varieties of kingfishers and flycatchers.
Quinta Mazatlan
This nature park offers beautiful walking trails, diverse wildlife, and a historic mansion with interesting architecture and exhibits. This is a great place for rarities like the Crimson-collared Grosbeak which seems to be a yearly visitor. Other great migratory and local birds visit here as well.
Cameron County
Resaca De La Palma State Park & World Birding Center
This state park offers excellent opportunities for birding and wildlife viewing with many unique species and well-maintained trails for hiking and biking.
Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge
This wildlife refuge offers numerous well-maintained hiking and biking trails, providing ample opportunities to see a wide variety of birds and other wildlife, including alligators and bobcats.
Arroyo Colorado World Birding Center
More than a mile hike and bike trail with ample opportunites to view birds.
Boca Chica Wildlife Refuge
More than 1,000 acres with beaches & dunes for swimming, fishing, surfing, bird-watching & picnics.
Sabal Palm Sanctuary
This nature sanctuary offers beautiful walking trails, a variety of tropical palm trees, and opportunities to see diverse birds and wildlife.
Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park
This historical site offers engaging information about the Mexican-American War through well-maintained trails, informative signage, and an excellent video. It's a great place to find the sought after Botteri's Sparrow. You can find plenty of other species as well.
South Padre Island Area - Cameron County
Convention Center
Always a great chance at some really nice birds, especially during peak migration as most birds will come through this area first after coming across the gulf. When they get here, they are tired, thirsty and hungry and gives viewers the best chance at seeing them well as they don't mind as much.
South Padre Island Birding And Nature Center
Seems to be where rarities occur mostly. There's a small entry fee here but plenty to see including plenty of birds and even some alligators.
