Texas Birding Tour Prices
Guided half-day, 3/4-day and full-day birding — Austin and across Texas
Guided birding tours are $250 for a half day (4 hours), $325 for a 3/4 day (6 hours) and $400 for a full day (8 hours). Every price covers 1–2 birders, with $50 per additional person after that — so the more birders in your group, the lower the cost per person. A $100 deposit reserves your date. Trips run from Austin and the Texas Hill Country to the Gulf Coast, the Rio Grande Valley and West Texas.

What's included in every trip
- Guiding for 1–2 birders at the price shown — additional birders are $50 each.
- A written trip report with the complete bird list for the group, shared with everyone after the tour.
- Any skill level. If you're new to birding, I'll teach you as we go — no experience needed.
- Target planning. Tell me your lifers and I'll build the route and timing around them.
- Photography help if you want it — I'm a photographer, so we'll work for the light and the perch.
Bring your own binoculars, food and drinks, hiking shoes, weather gear and bug spray — see the FAQ for the full list. On larger group trips you'll also cover any park entry fees.
Which trip length should I choose?
Half day — $250
The right call for a single target close to Austin: the Golden-cheeked Warbler, the Black-capped Vireo, or a morning at Hornsby Bend. Four hours starting at dawn, when the birds are most active.
3/4 day — $325
Two more hours buys a second site. Good for pairing both Hill Country endemics in one outing, or adding a water stop to a woodland morning without committing to a full day.
Full day — $400
Best for distance and big lists — the coast, High Island in migration, Whooping Cranes at Aransas, or a broad Hill Country loop. Eight hours and the most species.
Multi-day & custom
Trips to the Rio Grande Valley or Big Bend are best over several days. These are quoted per trip — tell me your dates and I'll put together an itinerary and a price.
Most of the trips are from 1 to 3 people. Larger Groups can definitely be had as well.
Larger Group Trips
At times we will have medium to large groups that are either guided by me solely or with additional guides helping out. On these particular trips, there will be multiple vehicles to follow or meet at different locations throughout the day. On these trips, you'll also need to pay for any additonal costs such as entry fees, food and drinks, etc. Pricing for these trips will be customized depending on the specifics of each trip.
I also offer trips with use of my bass boat so if there are any birds that can be seen by water, I can get you on those as well. The greatest thing about going on the boat is that you can usually get much closer and there's always a possibility to get some really amazing shots since you can shoot really low and close to the water as my boat sits really low in the water. There is usually an additional cost to these trips so please contact me for more information on these. I can also take up to 5 people besides myself so it could make for a nice group trip. Again, pricing changes per person with a larger group so we can discuss that.
I can also do a multi-adventure trip in my bass boat. We can go fishing and birding during the same trip. I have a lot of clients that really enjoy these trips. I always experience a lot of birds while I'm out on my bass fishing guide trips and one of my regular clients originally gave me that idea so that's when I started offering these types of trips.
Birding tour pricing FAQ
How much does a guided birding tour in Texas cost?
A half day (4 hours) is $250, a 3/4 day (6 hours) is $325 and a full day (8 hours) is $400. Each price covers 1–2 birders, plus $50 for each additional person.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per group, not per person. The rate covers up to 2 birders, and each birder after that is $50 — so the cost per person drops as your group grows. A full day for two people is $400 total; for four people it's $500 total, or $125 each.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes — a $100 deposit is required before your trip. Dates in peak season fill early, so it's best to make arrangements as soon as you know when you'd like to go.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Cash is king, but I mainly accept Venmo (@texashawgs). Other forms can usually be arranged — just ask if Venmo doesn't work for you.
What does the price include?
Guiding for your group, route and timing planned around your target birds, instruction at any skill level, and a written trip report with the group's complete bird list afterward. You bring your own binoculars, food and drinks, and appropriate clothing; on larger group trips you also cover park entry fees.
How much are multi-day trips to the Rio Grande Valley or Big Bend?
Those are quoted per trip, since they depend on the number of days, the route and your targets. Send me your dates and what you're hoping to see and I'll put together an itinerary and a price.
Do you charge extra for a boat trip?
Yes, there's usually an additional cost for trips using my bass boat, and pricing varies with group size. I can take up to 5 people besides myself. Contact me for a quote.
Do I need to be an experienced birder to book?
Not at all. Plenty of my clients are new to it — I'll teach you what you need to know as we go, at whatever pace suits you.
